A Rainy Day in Brussels

10/13/12
We woke up to rain this morning but decided to take the city bus tour anyway.  Why not, what better than staying dry while touring?  But first, a walk to the train station for a breakfast.  Yes, the train station.

This hotel doesn't provide breakfast, & we've discovered that when all shops & cafes are closed, there's always food & drink at the stations, & the pastries & coffee are as good as the cafes.  In fact, today I had this delicious waffle & a Starbuck's coffee!  The sugar was kind of cooked on the waffle, making it crunchy & sweet.

Now, back on the bus. We sat on the top of the double decker bus which was covered & even got the front seats-----a great view, but the rain kept good pictures to a minimum.  Louise Square is a shopping mecca with stores such as: Versace, Tiffany, Urban Outfitters, Esprit, Boss, & many others.  The bus just went too fast for me to write them all on my list.  Forgive the raindrops & see what I saw from the bus in this series of pictures.

On such a dreary day, this woman dressed in white walking her solid white dog caught my eye:

Statues often tell a story as this one, a man & his loyal dog, does.  The tips of his waxed-looking mustache are gold.  I love it!

We ate dinner in a bustling, teeming area of the Grand Place where there are actually barkers luring you into the numerous restaurants.  It's an alley actually, about 200 yards long, awnings from both sides almost meet in the middle, so rain is not a deterrent to eating outside.  It's called Restaurant Row, or Rue des Bouchers.  A sea of humans, seafood, laughter, & I hate to say it, but too much cigarette smoke.  The latter couldn't dampen the contagious party feel, however.  We had a delicious seafood dinner.

This shop reminded us of Paris with its beautiful macaroons:

How about this big chocolate fountain in a shop window?

Something interesting---beers are usually served in glasses with their logo on them.  The shapes & styles of the glasses are variable, but all large enough to hold an entire beer.  Here's another Trappist beer Dave tried with dinner tonight.  It was really good & had 10% alcohol content.  It's called Roquefort.

For the last picture, a little humor is in order.  This is a beer ad in front of a restaurant.  Notice what the little boy is doing----

THOUGHT OF THE DAY:  It takes more than rain to keep us from sightseeing & enjoying the outdoors.  Rain gear plus Dana's umbrella saved the day!
