Bruges, Belgium

10/9/12
We arrived in Bruges today after only a 3 hour drive.  It's a beautiful city with wonderful architecture, chocolates galore, lace shops & very good food.  We're staying at the Adorna Hotel which is on the canal & super cute.  www.adornes.be  The only problem is that I can't write this blog in my jammies as I usually do.  We're on the 3rd floor, & the wifi doesn't do well up there.  I was told to use the lobby, but the basement which is a kind of rec room with tv, dvd player, comfy couches, etc, gets a strong signal, so here we are in the cave like basement with a curving bricked ceiling.  It's cozy, Karl.  You would love it!  The hotel encompasses both buildings in this picture:

Here are some pictures from our walk around town this afternoon:

To enter the old town of Bruges, we drove through this city gate.  It felt like our car just barely fit!

We've now been in several chocolate shops--Yum...Here's a sign in one of the windows:

The owner of one shop told us she & her brother had been making chocolates for 27 years, so we bought some from her.  She gave samples too!

There are fewer bakeries here than in Germany, but there are still plenty.  We happened upon a cookie shop:

A lace & chocolate store were side by side, so I took this picture.

We stopped into this pub to sample some Belgian beer, & we got 4 to try.

The 4th came later because they had to tap a new keg. So here's the first 3 & then the 4th, which was cherry beer!  I kid you not, & it was good!

We saw a skateboard shop here & wondered how you could possibly skate on cobblestones.  The entire town is cobblestone streets.  Thank goodness we chose to wear our sneakers as did many others we've noticed.

We think this statue is from a Mozart piece based on what we could make out.  Anyway, it was very cute as is the guy standing next to it.

The weather continues to be great, & we're walking a lot.  Hopefully, the car will stay in the hotel garage the entire 3 days we're here.  We hope to take the self-guided walking tour of the entire town tomorrow.  Maybe that's too ambitious---we'll see.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: What a beautiful town....
